Liberal Senators Cloak Unpopular Immigration Bill

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid brought Senator Dick Durban’s “Dream Act” [ S.2205] to the Senate floor last Wednesday in hopes of quickly passing what is a segment of the immigration bill soundly rebuked in June when calls from an outraged public brought down the Senate phone system. No summary was offered on the new bill, no hearings and no committee discussions.

I strongly stated my objections to the bill and the way in with the Senate leadership tried to push it past he pubic to my Senator, Barbara Boxer, to which I got the following feeble response:

As you may know, the Senate recently considered S.1639, a bill that would comprehensively reform our immigration system. On June 28, 2007, after weeks of negotiations and debate, the Senate voted against moving the bill forward.

Although comprehensive immigration reform has stalled, certain legislative proposals that were included in S.1639 continue to be considered on their own or as amendments to other bills. These proposals include the DREAM Act, the AgJOBS program, and increased funding for border security.

I believe our immigration problems will only get worse unless we work together to resolve them. Be assured that I will continue to fight to improve our immigration system in a manner that strengthens our border security, protects American workers, and reduces illegal immigration.

I’m being told by my own Senator in conjunction with Harry Reid that segments of the rejected legislation will “…continue to be considered on their own…” without additional debate “…or as amendments to other bills…” I do want but have to eat their political benefits to get.

The “Dream Act” provides what amounts to amnesty to more than 1 million illegals from age 5 to 19 and millions more between 20 and 30 based on school and higher education attendance who have, other than immigration infractions, maintained a clean record. The act would provide yet another magnet for untold legions yet to cross the boarder knowing proof of school admission and attendance would gain amnesty. The supporters know the benefits they will gain at the polls, where illegals regularly vote illegally, to the detriment of the American Citizens they are sworn to represent. [ro_17]
